Lighthouse Avenue Night Construction To Start

Tom Reeves, NMNA President

Today, April 8, I attended a meeting with the Mayor, Councilmember Dr. Barber and two business district representatives, one from Lighthouse and one from Cannery Row. The upshot of the meeting is that work will commence tonight and will progress over the next four nights. One travel lane will remain open in each direction on Lighthouse Avenue throughout the night. Other work such as the “micro-surfacing” and striping will still need to be accomplished but I have not heard whether any of that work will be performed during the day or night.

The Mayor and Councilmember Dr. Barber admitted that the public outreach for this project was lacking and that lessons have been learned. What interests me is what will the impact of the night work be on those living on and near Lighthouse Avenue. After the construction starts, if you have comments about the construction, both good and bad, please let us know as well as letting the City staff and Council.

Councilmember Dr. Barber resolved that she will establish a working group consisting of the NMNA, Cannery Row and Lighthouse Business associations and a representative from Pacific Grove, that will meet regularly to coordinate traffic related issues for this constrained corridor. With more hotel rooms coming on line in Pacific Grove, the traffic on Lighthouse Avenue will get worse unless there is something done to reduce traffic such as satellite parking and convenient free shuttles.

Neighborhood and Community Improvement Program (NCIP) Meeting This Thursday

Tom Reeves, NMNA President

The NCIP Committee will be meeting this Thursday, April 11, at the City Council Chambers at 6pm to discuss project nominations for New Monterey as well as other neighborhoods. The purpose of this meeting to explain the scope of each proposal, answer questions about the projects and make minor adjustments to the proposed project scopes.

There are two projects for which there are duplicate proposals with some variation between them. The NMNA submitted a proposal for the upgrades to Fire Station 12 located on Hawthorne street. The neighborhood membership has decided to pull that proposal since the City also has a similar proposal. The renovation of Hilltop Center is the other project. The neighborhood’s version is the same as the City’s except the neighborhood’s includes a seismic strength analysis as well as strengthening. The neighborhood did not include an emergency generator for Hilltop as the City’s proposal does but instead, by a separate proposal, the neighborhood is asking for solar panels and a battery backup system.

The other project that your NMNA has submitted is the updating of our 33 year old neighborhood plan which is out of date in numerous areas. All the projects that are funded need to be in conformance with the neighborhood plan so it is a cornerstone document that needs updating.

You can participate in person, via Zoom or by phone. Follow this link to see the agenda and how to participate. We strongly encourage your participation especially if you were the submitter or a stake holder.
